Fluor awarded up to $831M to restore power in Puerto Rico

ConDig (08-Dec-17).  Engineering and construction group Fluor Corp (FLR) has secured its second contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to rebuild transmission and distribution lines in Puerto Rico following the devastating impact of Hurricane Maria in September.

The three-month deal, which is funded at $495 million and has a ceiling of $831 million, will feature evaluation, restoration, repair and replacement of structures and equipment supporting the electrical infrastructure of the island.

In October, Irving, Texas-based Fluor was awarded a $240 million contract to help restore electricity in Puerto Rico, with an additional $261 million being added to the original task order on December 4.

Both bids were awarded to Fluor under the USACE’s basic ordering agreement contract.

“Fluor is committed to its support of the Corps and its mission to assist with the ongoing efforts to restore power to Puerto Rico,” said Tom D’Agostino, president of Fluor’s government group.

“Our job is to help repair and restore transmission, subtransmission and distribution lines, as well as substations across the island. With the support of the Corps and the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA), we are making daily progress.”

He added that the company was working with more than a dozen local businesses and are procuring hundreds of thousands of dollars of local materials.

Hurricane Maria, which was a high-end Category 4 storm, caused widespread damage across Puerto Rico and could cost the island $45 billion to $95 billion.
