Granite lands $32M bridge replacement contract in California

ConDig (31-Aug-18). Civil contractor and construction materials producer Granite Construction Inc has bagged a $32 million deal to replace a bridge in Bakersfield, California.

Under the deal with the City of Bakersfield, the Watsonville, California-based contractor will also revamp State Route 99, the Belle Terrace Overcrossing, the northbound SR-99/eastbound SR-58 Connector and local roads.

The improvements on SR 99 include the construction of over 3,000 lineal feet of retaining wall as well as an additional auxiliary lane, according to Granite.

Construction on the project is slated to start in October this year and set to be finished in April 2020.

The deal forms part of the Belle Terrace Operational Improvements scheme, which is phase 2 of the Centennial Corridor Project that will provide route continuity and traffic congestion relief for SR 58 from Cottonwood Road to Interstate 5.

Earlier this month, Granite reported a net loss of $8.3 million in the quarter ended June 30 compared with profit of $14.1 million in the same period last year due to a rise in acquisition expenses following the purchase of Layne Christensen Co.

Last month, a subsidiary of Granite won a $39 million contract to revamp the Westbound section of I-90 in Chicago, Illinois.
