US DOT awards $426m for freight and highway improvements in 12 states
The US Department of Transportation has announced $426 million in Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects (INFRA) grants for road capacity, congestion and freight-network improvements across 12 states.
The awards include $85 million to add a general-use lane in each direction along approximately 20 miles of Interstate 4 between State Road 434 and State Road 472 in Florida; $53.5 million for widening and reconstruction along K-96 in Wichita, Kansas; and $28 million for a grade-separated interchange and road improvements around Kaliste Saloom Road and US-90 in Louisiana.
The funding awards are not themselves construction contract awards, but they identify a pipeline of public highway work. US DOT announcement.
Granite–Super JV wins $324.8m Big Creek Tunnel contract in Ohio
Granite and Super Excavators have secured a $324.8 million contract from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District for the Big Creek Tunnel in the Cleveland area.
The project comprises 22,300 linear feet of 20-foot-diameter tunnel, 3,115 feet of ancillary tunnels and associated shafts, diversion and screening structures, sewers and utility work. Part of the district’s $3 billion Project Clean Lake program, the tunnel is designed to eliminate approximately 550 million gallons of combined sewer releases annually.
Construction is scheduled to begin this fall, with completion expected in winter 2030. Granite announcement.
Purdue and Elanco break ground on 150,000-sq-ft Indianapolis research institute
Purdue University, Elanco Animal Health and partners have broken ground on the 150,000-sq-ft One Health Research Institute in Indianapolis, a centerpiece of the emerging One Health Innovation District.
The planned building will provide research laboratories, shared equipment, incubator and collaboration space and facilities for animal-health and veterinary partners. The groundbreaking took place October 6. Purdue announcement.
Hensel Phelps starts 143,000-sq-ft Colorado headquarters
Hensel Phelps has broken ground on a new four-story, 143,000-sq-ft corporate headquarters at Avenue South at Centerra in Loveland, Colorado.
The project incorporates mass timber and is targeting LEED v5 Gold and WELL Platinum certification. A planned solar system is designed to generate electricity equivalent to at least 20% of peak building demand. The company held its groundbreaking September 30 and announced the project October 6. Walsh selected for Sacramento airport control tower project
Walsh has secured a design-build contract for a new air traffic control tower at Sacramento International Airport in California. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2027. The award adds to the pipeline of aviation infrastructure work, although the project is not yet in active construction.
