NY’s Holland Tunnel secures $229.6M from FEMA for storm repairs

ConDig (19-Apr-17). The Holland Tunnel in New York City is to receive $229.6 million to repair damages caused by Superstorm Sandy.

The funding was secured through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for repairs to 22 sites on the Holland Tunnel after it was flooded during Superstorm Sandy in October 2012.

It will be handed to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and will cover about 90% of the estimated $255 million in repairs to the tunnel.

“The Holland Tunnel was severely flooded by storm surge after Superstorm Sandy and repairs were sorely needed in order to ensure it would continue to serve as a main commuting artery in New York City,” said US senator Charles Schumer.

Senator Bob Menendez also noted that Superstorm Sandy accelerated the deterioration of the city’s aging infrastructure, including our roads, bridges and tunnels.
