RQ Construction lands $64.7M deal for ship repair training center

ConDig (18-Sept).  Privately-held contractor RQ Construction LLC has bagged a $64.7 million firm-fixed-price contract for the design and build of a ship repair training center at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Under the deal, the Carlsbad, California-based company will construct a four- to six-story building with a structural steel frame and columns and joists.

The building exterior walls will consist of brick veneer cavity wall construction with reinforced concrete masonry unit back-up with a sloped standing-seam metal roof over structural steel framing.

The project will also feature a raised loading dock, mechanical/electrical equipment rooms, fire protection room, micro-exchange for student support, telecom rooms, passenger elevators, freight elevator, security and fire detection alarms, mass notification systems, and all necessary components for the intruder detection system.

Work on the scheme is expected to be finished by June 2021.

The contract was competitively tendered through the Navy Electronic Commerce Online website, with 10 bids received.

At the end of last month, RQ said that it had been selected for the design and construction of an Undersea Rescue Command Operations Building at a naval base in Coronado.

The $29.8 million contract will include all site improvements and preparations, superstructure, mechanical and electrical utilities, pile foundation, interior construction and finishes, roofing, plumbing, and lighting.
