ConDig (05-Feb-26) Lane Construction Corp. has secured a $389 million design-build contract from the Virginia Department of Transportation to modernize a key stretch of Interstate 64 in Norfolk, advancing congestion relief and long-term infrastructure resilience in the Hampton Roads region.
The project will upgrade roughly seven miles of the I-64 Hampton Roads Express Lanes corridor, converting existing eastbound and westbound general-purpose lanes and shoulders into a configuration that includes one part-time high-occupancy express shoulder lane and three general-purpose lanes in each direction. The work is intended to improve traffic flow and provide a managed-lane option during peak travel periods along one of Virginia’s most heavily traveled corridors.
Lane, the US subsidiary of Italy-based Webuild Group, will also widen or rehabilitate 19 bridges and replace two bridges as part of the project.
Construction is scheduled for completion in late 2029, with the company planning to use design solutions aimed at minimizing traffic disruptions during construction and reducing long-term maintenance needs.
“This project reinforces Lane’s leadership in delivering sustainable, resilient infrastructure in one of our key US markets,” the company said in announcing the award.
The I-64 contract builds on Lane’s growing portfolio of work in Virginia. The contractor is currently constructing the I-64 Segment 4A/4B project in the Hampton Roads District, a $61 million interchange project at Minnieville Road in Prince William County, and taxiway pavement repairs at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach.
The award also follows Lane’s recently announced $643 million Westshore Interchange project in Florida, underscoring strong momentum for the contractor in major transportation markets.
Lane said the I-64 modernization project will enhance safety, reduce congestion and improve travel reliability in the Norfolk area, which plays a critical role in regional freight movement, military operations and commuter traffic.
Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Lane specializes in large-scale civil infrastructure projects and has been involved in the development of U.S. transportation systems for more than a century. The company is wholly owned by Webuild, which counts the United States as its third-largest market by revenue.
