ConDig (09-July–23) Civil contractor and construction materials producer Granite Construction has snagged a $111 million contract with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) for a major infrastructure rehabilitation project in Salt Lake City.
The multifaceted initiative spans the Interstate 215 (I-215) corridor from State Route 201 to North Temple and is slated to begin in August this year, with completion expected by November 2026.
The project, which will be funded by both UDOT and federal sources, will be added to Granite’s second-quarter committed and awarded projects (CAP).
“This project is multifaceted, encompassing a diverse array of components that span strategic planning, creative development, stakeholder engagement, and operational execution,” said Jason Klaumann, Granite vice president of regional operations.
“It will keep Granite’s paving and structure crews busy through the winter and into the fall of 2026, further strengthening the company’s relationship with UDOT and positioning Granite as a key player in future large bid-build projects.”
The contract covers rehabilitation of a 3.3-mile segment of I-215, 12 miles of ramps connecting SR-201, Interstate 80, and California Avenue, and work on 22 bridges.
Key project components include:
- Rubblizing existing Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP) and overlaying with 175,000 tons of highly modified hot mix asphalt (HMHMA)
- Bridge rehabilitation, including 18 deck replacements—10 via hydro-demolition and 8 through conventional remove-and-replace methods—plus pothole patching and other structural repairs
- Installation of 22,000 linear feet of storm drainage
- Ramp metering systemsat California Avenue to improve traffic flow and safety
All asphalt materials, including the 175,000 tons of HMHMA and 5,000 tons of temporary hot mix asphalt, will be produced at Granite’s Walker Hot Plant.
The project underscores Granite’s ongoing expansion in the Intermountain West and adds to the company’s growing portfolio of federally funded infrastructure upgrades.
In May, Granite was awarded a contract by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) to lead the first phase of a $54 million highway realignment project in the state’s Interior region.
