Lunda Construction wins St. Paul railroad bridge replacement project

Lunda Construction has secured a contract to replace the 113-year-old Roberts Street Railroad Bridge over the Mississippi River in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Parent company Tutor Perini announced the award on July 8. The value of the contract was not disclosed, but the project will be added to Tutor Perini’s backlog for the second quarter of 2026.

The project will replace the existing 189-foot-long vertical-lift truss bridge with a new 215-foot-long rolling bascule truss bridge.

Work will also include replacing six steel approach bridges, rehabilitating the existing concrete piers and removing timber protection walls along both sides of the river’s navigation channel.

Lunda will install a new steel-pile protection wall around a new support pier, together with a 38-foot-diameter, sand-filled crash bumper. The contractor will also build a concrete support platform for the bridge’s new operations building.

The existing bridge will remain open to both rail and marine traffic while the replacement structure is constructed.

Construction is expected to begin in July 2026, with substantial completion scheduled for December 2029.

Wisconsin-based Lunda Construction specializes in heavy civil infrastructure, including bridges, rail projects and marine construction. The company is a subsidiary of Tutor Perini.
