Skanska bags $249M deal for Verrazzano-Narrows bridge cable project

ConDig (19-Aug-25)  Swedish developer and contractor Skanska has secured a $249 million contract by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to deliver a main cable dehumidification project on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York.

The project calls for the design and installation of a dehumidification system on all four main cables of the bridge, which connects Staten Island and Brooklyn. To further protect the structure, Skanska will also install acoustic monitoring systems on each cable, supported by new electrical and communication infrastructure.

As part of the contract, Skanska will provide five years of maintenance and monitoring of the new systems after commissioning. Additional scope includes facilitating internal inspection of cable panels, replacing all cable band bolts, obstruction lights, messenger cables, hand ropes, and stanchions.

The contract was formally awarded in July 2025, with completion slated for September 2029.

Skanska said the project continued to highlights it role in delivering large-scale, technically complex infrastructure upgrades in New York City, where the company has long been a key player in bridge, tunnel, and transit system improvements.

In June, Skanska secured an additional contract worth $250 million to upgrade Logan Airport’s Terminal E in Boston.
