Sterling Construction subsidiary lands $135M dam project

ConDig (25-Feb-21).  A subsidiary of Texas-based civil contractor Sterling Construction Co has bagged a $135 million deal for the construction of the North Haiwee Dam No. 2 (NHD2) in Inyo County, California.

Under the deal with the City of Los Angeles, Road and Highway Builders, LLC will mine and process one million cubic yards of material for the multiple zoned embankment dam.

It will also drill more than 13,000 individual cement, deep-soil shafts for the dam footing. Each individual shaft is from 40 to 60 feet in length and 5 feet in diameter.

Sterling said the project will also involve the rerouting of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, which supplies clean drinking water to the city of Los Angeles, to allow for the appropriate tie-ins for the dam construction.

Work on the scheme will kick off in May this year and will take about four and a half years to complete.

“We are extremely pleased to have been selected by the City of Los Angeles to construct NHD2,” stated Joe Cutillo, Sterling’s ceo.

“The purpose of this new dam is to improve the seismic reliability of the North Haiwee Reservoir and maintain the function of an essential water conveyance for the city of Los Angeles as well as protect the local populations from possible hazardous flooding event.”

Last June, a subsidiary of Sterling Construction booked a $97 million deal for three Utah airport upgrade projects.

In May, Sterling Construction reported a 73% rise in the first quarter of this year as revenue shot up on improved earnings in its heavy civil and specialty services divisions that offset a drop in residential.

In April, a subsidiary of Sterling Construction secured a $80 million contract to upgrade the Bucholz Army airfield runway in the Kwajalein Atoll of the Marshall Islands.
