Granite joint venture drives off with $348M road upgrade deal in Utah

ConDig (07-Jan-20).  A joint venture led by civil contractor and construction materials producer Granite Construction has landed a $348 million deal to revamp US-89 in Farmington, Utah.

Under the progressive design-build contract with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), Granite and joint venture partner Oak Hills Constructors will upgrade US-89 by widening the roadway and adding interchanges and bridges.

This includes the widening of nine miles of the roadway from two lanes in each direction to three, the addition of four interchanges and two grade-separated intersections. In addition, crews will excavate two million cubic yards of material and relocate 150 miles of utilities.

About 300,000 tons of hot-mix asphalt and 100,000 tons of base rock will be provided by Granite facilities.

“We look forward to continuing our successful partnership with UDOT as well as the opportunity to put Granite’s expertise to work on the state’s first progressive design-build project,” said Jason Klaumann, vice president of Granite’s Utah operations.

Last month, a subsidiary of Granite secured a $16 million contract to upgrade sections of Interstate 94 (I-94) at Montrose Avenue in Cook County, Illinois.
