Con Dig (14-Oct-26) — Industry association SEMI expects construction starts for new US 300mm semiconductor fabrication facilities or production lines to increase from three in 2026 to four in 2027, according to its latest 300mm Fab Outlook.
The forecast points to continued investment in the specialized buildings and infrastructure needed for advanced chip production, even as developers phase projects around equipment demand, financing and customer commitments.
SEMI projects global 300mm fab equipment spending will rise 31% in 2026 to approximately $149 billion, with further growth forecast through 2029. Equipment expenditure is distinct from construction spending, but it provides a useful indicator of the scale of the industry’s expansion plans.
Semiconductor fabs typically require complex cleanroom environments, extensive electrical and mechanical systems, process piping, water treatment and highly controlled building conditions. Those requirements can make them significant opportunities for specialist construction firms and suppliers.
Why it matters: An increase in anticipated US fab starts would help sustain demand for technically demanding industrial construction, particularly cleanroom, M&E and process-infrastructure contractors.
