ConDig (12-Jul-17). A joint venture comprising of Lane Construction and Schiavone Construction has secured a $232 million contract to replace the Unionport Bridge in Bronx County, New York.
Under the deal, the joint venture team will replace the moveable bascule bridge that allows the Bruckner Expressway to cross Westchester Creek.
The project will be done in 10 stages in 48 months, with work slated to start later this year and be completed by mid-2021
Lane Construction, which is a subsidiary of Italy’s Salini Impregilo Group, said the challenge of the project will be to keep open both the expressway and the waterway during construction.
“This will entail building two temporary bridges and erecting the final bascule span in an open position,” it said.
The Unionport Bridge supports 50,000-60,000 vehicles per day on the Bruckner Expressway Service Road over Westchester Creek in the Unionport/Castle Hill/Throgs Neck sections of the Bronx.
The contract will be the first won by Lane in the New York City area.
Last week, the company bagged a $580 million contract to build the Northeast Boundary Tunnel in Washington, D.C.
It has also recently secured a $188 million Three Rivers protection and overflow reduction tunnel in Indiana and a $336 million extension of the 395 Express Lanes in Virginia.
